Celebrating the Mothers of our UZIT Program

Last Updated on Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:11 Written by Urban Zen Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:11

collage Celebrating the Mothers of our UZIT ProgramIn celebration of Mother’s Day we wanted to give a love-filled shout-out to the mother’s of our Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program. In the three years since the launch of the UZIT Program, several of our students have had the incredible experience of learning the benefits of the eastern healing techniques not only for patient care and self-care, but also for maternal care. Caring for the next generation included moms with baby bumps or baby seats, while others learned they would be receiving more than a certificate at the end of their training. These mothers and mothers-to-be were able to use the modalities to care for themselves before, during and after delivery, and the results have been beautiful, as you can see.

The whole Urban Zen team is wishing a very Happy Mother’s Day to our UZIT moms.

Dr. Christiane Northrup on Letting Food Inspire

“Food is the most intimate thing you can buy…Unlike clothes and shoes that dress the outside, food goes into your body and builds who you become.”
— Ani Phyo

Northrup blog Dr. Christiane Northrup on Letting Food Inspire

I love this quote. It is the essence of what I mean when I talk about eating to flourish. Think about it and let it sink in. Making decisions about your health takes on a whole new meaning when you know what you want to do with your life and who you want to be, doesn’t it?

Let’s talk about diet, exercise, and weight for a moment. I’ve studied nutrition, different diets, and medical studies for 45 years. And, I’ve been asked the how-to’s of weight loss many times. Here’s a summary of what I’ve learned over the last 15 years or so. It’s clear that maintaining a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or under is best. Eating low-glycemic foods is also very important, because it keeps your blood sugar from spiking. Rapid changes in blood sugar levels stimulate cravings, which leads to weight gain, and increase the likelihood of systemic inflammation. This in turn can lead to all kinds of chronic degenerative diseases, including type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Finally, it’s almost impossible to stay trim without exercising. Luckily, a little exercise goes a long way.

No one can refute these facts. But ultimately, reaching and maintaining healthy body composition and vibrant health through the right food choices happens in both your mind and body. Trust me—merely sticking to the latest fad diet or reaching for the perfect BMI won’t bring about the transformation. It is, indeed, personal.

The 3rd Annual Women in the World Summit

wiw The 3rd Annual Women in the World Summit

“There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.” – Madeleine Albright, Women in the World Summit, 2012

Community. It’s one of the most important, most fundamental elements of the Urban Zen philosophy. We’ve seen passion amplified exponentially because of a shared commitment to create change and we’ve seen innovative solutions born out of collective conversations. From the very beginning, women have always, always been an integral part of our community and like the above quote from Madeleine Albright conveys, we believe that creating a sisterhood of support is essential.

Our founder, Donna Karan, has a huge heart for women and has long understood how important it is for women to support each other. It is because of these things that the Urban Zen Foundation team attended the Daily Beast’s 3rd Annual Women in the World Summit, which kicked off on Thursday March 8th, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The three-day event, hosted by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, brought together some of the most prominent figures in business, politics, women’s rights and journalism to discuss the most prevalent issues affecting women today. With an itinerary that literally included hundreds of women, it’s difficult to concisely convey the enormity of wisdom, passion and motivation that was shared at the summit. With powerhouse women like Secretary Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Madeleine Albright, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Sheryl Sandberg, Zainab Salbi, Diane Von Furstenberg, Sarah Brown and Chelsea Clinton taking the stage to give voice to the rise of women, the on-going fight for equality and the necessity of coming together, it was impossible to not want to be a part of this compelling story of change.
