What is your most potent memory?
Join us for a live Twitter conversation with Marilu Henner, keynote speaker in the Rubin Museum’s BrainWave Series. We will be live tweeting about the magic of memory, a concept that Marilu is exceedingly familiar with as she is someone with Superior Autobiographical Memory – an uncanny ability to recall details of every day of her life – a talent known to be shared by only six other people in the world.
Our conversation is also a celebration of Marilu’s latest book, Total Memory Makeover: Uncover Your Past, Take Charge of Your Future, which depicts her personal insights and experiences as to how having a reliable memory has helped her in countless scenarios. She also gives readers advice in making memory work for them, from having the right attitude about life and developing a healthy mindset about the past, to building a personal history “track” and using it to actually change your life.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to leverage the Twittersphere while you ponder the following questions:
1. Does an infallible memory help you make better decisions?
2. What types of memories are most valuable to you?
3. What does it feels like to recall an old memory.

A Conversation with Tim McHenry, Producer at the Rubin Museum of Art

Tim McHenry, producer at the Rubin Museum of Art since 2003, has been active in the arts for decades, beginning at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland and the Zurich Opera in Switzerland. As artistic director of the Armistice Festival (1988) he also edited an anthology The Lost Voices of World War I, published by Bloomsbury. He has also worked for Vanity Fair and The New Yorker where he programmed for the annual New Yorker Festival for the first four years. In charge of the programmatic content of the Rubin Museum of Art since its founding in 2004, he has developed, among many brilliant offerings, the successful series BRAINWAVE. This year, Urban Zen is proud to collaborate with the Rubin Museum for this groundbreaking series.
Recently, we had the opportunity to talk with Tim. Here, we share the highlights of our conversation:
Urban Zen: Why did the Rubin Museum curate and produce BRAINWAVE? Does this build on previous programming?
Tim McHenry: In many practices of Buddhism, to reach enlightenment you need to have complete understanding and control of your mind. But how can you control your mind if you don’t know what your mind is? With that basic, simple question, the idea was born of having neuroscientists meet with people from other walks of life to talk about a subject of common interest, their brains and their minds. The on-stage conversation series was of course fuelled by the Dalai Lama’s well publicized interest in mind science and it seemed an ideal way in which the art in the museum could be seen to be relevant to contemporary sensibilities.

A Letter from Kris Carr to All Self-Healers

Last weekend I crawled out of my writing cave, dolled up and headed to NYC for Dr. Mark Hyman’s book launch at Donna Karan’s apartment. It was meteoric. MD star-studded. I was in heaven! Glamour + revolution = pinch me hard, like bruising hard.
As many of you know, Dr. Mark Hyman is the founder of the famed UltraWellness Center in Lenox, Massachusetts and the world’s leading functional medicine pioneer. He blogs for Crazy Sexy Life, is a dear friend, mentor and fellow status quo disturber, and I just love him. Why? Because he’s real and smart and so dang dedicated. We’ve spent many hours over dinner talking about the state of healthcare and how we can make a difference. And the one thing that stands out for me is the way he authentically lights up, like a curious (and brilliant) kid on a mission. It’s contagious.
Naturally when Mark sent me an early copy of his latest book I was thrilled to devour it. Well, not only did I love it, I found several new and important areas to improve in my own wellness routine. Mark includes easy quizzes that lead to big ah-ha’s. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, BAM! I’ve already scheduled some blood work and am hot on the case. Vegans and conscious non-vegans alike will learn an enormous amount about harnessing the power of your forks.

In celebration of Dr. Mark Hyman’s latest book, “The Blood Sugar Solution,” our founder, Donna Karan, opened her home to a community of like-minded people ready to reignite the conversation of putting CARE back into healthcare (a mission of the Urban Zen Foundation and a desperately needed solution in the healthcare field).
Joining Dr. Hyman for this necessary and relevant discussion were two of Urban Zen’s biggest well-being champions – Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Dean Ornish. All three physicians have been, and continue to be, at the forefront of holistic well-being and use their knowledge and passion to encourage individuals to change the way they approach health. As Dr. Ornish shared, “awareness is really the first step in healing.”
This philosophy was a unifying factor for the evening and the purpose behind Dr. Hyman’s new book. It is because of his deep understanding of the diabetes epidemic and its far-reaching impact on the state of this country’s collective health that Dr. Hyman wrote, “The Blood Sugar Solution.” Dr. Hyman believes that what we put at the end of our forks is one of the most important medical decisions we’ll ever make and that making informed decisions about lifestyle matter. Dr. Hyman shared his belief that if we want to change the system, “we have to create health where we live and work and breathe.”
