A COLLABORATION OF ARTISTS

We are proud and excited to join the Million Hearts for Haiti campaign, and are thrilled to tell you about the unique Urban Zen spin we’re putting on this. Not only do we want you to join the campaign, we want you to use it as an opportunity to showcase your own creative expression.

The plan is simple:

  • Purchase your heart
  • Design your heart with your arsenal of art supplies and ingenious creativity
  • Send us a picture of you and your heart along with a note about the inspiration behind your design

This is a wonderful way for you to give a little bit of your love to Haiti and we are thrilled to be able to showcase you as the compassionate artist that you are. Once we get your photo and inspiration note, we’ll make sure to include you on our Million Hearts for Haiti photo wall (coming soon). And, trust us, you’ll be in great company. Donna Karan, along with other renowned designers, are creating their own one of kind hearts. Plus, a dynamic crew of Fashion Design and Society MFA students from Parsons, and artists such as Andre Charles (see pictures below), have already returned their stunning creations.

HAND/EYE FUND

These hand-carved river stone hearts from the village of Cormier, located in a rural zone just east of Port au Prince, represent the best link between Haitian artisans and the distant markets they must reach to earn a living. HAND/EYE Fund, through its Austin, Texas importing partner, Tesoros Trading Co., offers employment to the carvers by buying the hearts from them.

The stone hearts are little labors of love created by the Haitian stone carvers of Cormier. They’re a testament to the resilient, tenacious, creative spirit of the Haitian people and it is this creativity that has inspired our project. As, Keith Recker of the HAND/EYE Fund said, “Out of nothing, Haitians create not just daily life, but a vast spiritual world of stunning intricacy.” So, join us. We’re excited to be stunned by the brilliance of your hearts.

Proceeds from sales of the hearts go to the HAND/EYE Fund’s artisan grants program in Haiti – which offers small cash grants to artists and artisans who need to rebuild houses and workshops, replenish tools and raw materials, and gain access to design input from the markets in which they are trying to sell. The HAND/EYE Fund’s artisan grants program supports Haiti artisans in their struggle to rebuild their lives and businesses in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake.
