Neal Barnard, M.D., is a clinical researcher, author, and health advocate. He has been the principal investigator or coinvestigator on several clinical trials investigating the effects of diet on health. Most recently, he was the principal investigator of a study on dietary interventions in diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health and conducted under the auspices of the George Washington University School of Medicine, in association with the University of Toronto.

He is the author of dozens of publications in scientific and medical journals as well as numerous nutrition books for lay readers and is frequently called on by news programs to discuss issues related to nutrition, research issues, and other controversial areas in modern medicine.

He is a frequent lecturer at scientific and lay conferences and has made presentations for the American Diabetes Association, American Public Health Association, the World Bank, the National Library of Medicine, and many other medical and scientific organizations.

Dr. Barnard grew up in Fargo, N.D. He received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and completed his residency at the same institution. He practiced at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York before returning to Washington to found the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in 1985. PCRM has since grown into a nationwide group of physicians and lay supporters that promotes preventive medicine and addresses controversies in modern medicine.

Dr. Barnard is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, a Life Member of the American Medical Association, and a member of the American Diabetes Association.

In addition to learning about weight control and how to tackle it, you’ll learn the best ways to beat diabetes, cut cholesterol, control blood pressure, and boost your energy. And, alongside of Dr. Barnard will be cooking instructors teaching you how to cook delicious healthy foods and you’ll taste some too!

BIOS:

Elena Brower, Jonah's mama and Certified Anusara Yoga Teacher, is the founder and co-owner of Virayoga. Teaching 13+ years, she's been featured in the New York Times, Yoga Journal, FitYoga, and the Element Yoga Beginner DVD series. Elena collaborates with Flavorpill to offer large-scale yoga classes worldwide, most recently at the Standard Hotel NY for EarthDay, the Museum of Modern Art, and at the Great Lawn in Central Park. Elena is the 2010 Global Yoga Ambassador for adidas teaching the methodology of Anusara yoga to their instructors worldwide. Currently she supports Yoga Gives Back, the Acumen Fund, Women for Women and Pamela Miles' Institute for the Advancement of Complementary Therapies. Elena is also an original member of the YogaEarth Yogi Leadership Board, an accomplished corps of yoga teachers coming together to pioneer yoga nutrition. Elizabeth Rossa is the director of Shriyoga, which was voted “Best New Generation of Yoga” by New York Magazine in 2005. Originally certified to teach yoga by Max Strom and Erich Schiffmann, Elizabeth spent many years refining her practice and teaching skills with Anusara founder John Friend. Encouraging her students to pause, breathe, and pay attention to how they are creating, Elizabeth holds space for clarity and freedom in her classes and teaches yoga and meditation with a fresh perspective. Also certified in Kundalini Yoga and reiki, Elizabeth continues to integrate new knowledge under the guidance of her primary teacher and mentor, Sally Kempton.

Please join Urban Zen Foundation for the Lineage Project Teacher Training Five-Day Workshop. The Lineage Project is one of the nation’s leading non-profit organizations providing alternative tools for physical, emotional and mental wellness to at-risk and incarcerated youth ages 10 to 21. Through the teaching of yoga and meditation to over 600 of these youth annually throughout New York City, we provide a unique forum to cultivate resiliency and positive youth development, teaching tools that can transform young lives. Attend our upcoming trainings to learn about The Lineage Project and the model we use to bring mindfulness practices to youth at high risk for involvement in the juvenile/criminal justice system.

Each day you will learn components of the Lineage Project’s Class Model as we practice together. Throughout the week you will get first-hand experience planning and teaching the model, culminating in teaching a full class. Additionally, training segments will include effective communication strategies, resiliency theory and addressing post-traumatic stress syndrome. Discussions will also focus on current reforms in the juvenile justice system in New York City. The workshop is open to teachers, clinicians, parents, juvenile justice staff and advocates and anyone interested in at-risk youth.

BIOS:

Jeramy Zimmerman came to the Lineage Project as a volunteer in 2005, and has enjoyed teaching (and learning) at various Lineage sites since then. In 2007, she became Lineage's Program Manager and she remains excited and inspired by her role. Jeramy is certified through OM Yoga Center in NYC. As a dancer and choreographer, Jeramy has worked with at-risk youth since 1993 and she sees her work with Lineage as a path fusing her prior work with her yoga practice.

Beth Navon, Executive Director, has been an administrator in the non-profit sector for over twenty-five years. Recognized for her expertise in the mental health field she has traveled all over the country to be on panels, lead workshops and moderate national conferences. She created a nationally recognized service delivery model for youth re-entering the community after incarceration and has published several articles and a book chapter describing how to replicate the model. Ms. Navon graduated from Simmons College School of Social Work with a Masters degree in Social Work in 1973. In 2003 Ms. Navon was certified in Executive Management from Columbia University's School of Business. Ms. Navon has been a yoga practitioner for over 35 years and recently passed her exam to become a certified yoga teacher.

SAG HARBOR- Saturday, August 14th, 2010 – In celebration of the international humanitarian organization, Right To Play, and the Urban Zen Foundation, families are invited for a Right To Play Day from 3:00 - 5:00pm (adult supervision required) followed by a reception at Urban Zen from 6:00-8:00pm (adults only). Festivities will commence on the lawn in front of the Breakwater Yacht Club with four play stations led by world-class Right To Play Athlete Ambassadors, Vanessa Chakour, professional boxer; Jason Rogers and Tim Morehouse, Olympic silver medalist fencers; and Devon Harris, three-time member of the Jamaican Olympic Bobsled team. There will be a music station led by Sag Harbor’s own, singer/songwriter, Alexa Ray Joel. The featuring songs inspired by Right To Play participants are accompanied by African drumming. The art station will have free face painting and tribal art printing. A special book signing with Devon Harris, a team member featured in the motion picture Cool Runnings, will have his children’s book “Yes, I can!” available for sale.
Admission is free and includes complimentary refreshments. Recommended age of children is 6 to 12 years old.

A photography exhibit featuring works by Sag Harbor local, Bettina Stelle, and her visit to Right To Play's program in Ghana will be on display in Urban Zen at 4 Bay Street. In addition, photographer and philanthropist, Elizabeth Jordan, has kindly donated two works for auction which will also be on display at Urban Zen.

All proceeds will benefit Right To Play & Urban Zen including Right To Play merchandise available for sale such as their iconic Red Ball featuring the logo “Look After Yourself Look After One Another.”

Pamela Peak, Right To Play USA’s National Director emphasizes “We harness the power of play to improve the lives of children in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the world and are thrilled by the opportunity to showcase our work at the Right To Play Day. Parents and children will have the opportunity to learn through playing the same games and programs children in countries like Ghana, Lebanon, Peru, and Pakistan do.”
