URBAN ZEN INTEGRATIVE THERAPY PROGRAM
The current paradigm of western medicine is to focus on treatment of the disease, not the patient. While science has made miraculous strides in controlling and eradicating disease, healthcare has neglected to include the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of not only the patient but also those who care for them, the nurses and loved ones.
| THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE UZIT PROGRAM Without question, at one point or another in our lifetime, each of us will be a patient as will our loved ones. Before this possibility becomes a reality, we all need to consider what is important in patient care. The voice of the patient should be listened to and heard. Please take a moment to watch this video to learn why Urban Zen was inspired to make healthcare and well-being an initiative of great importance and passion. |

PHILOSOPHY OF THE UZIT PROGRAM

| WHY Under its well-being initiative, Urban Zen Foundation is dedicated to integrating eastern healing techniques with western medicine to treat the patient, their loved ones and caregivers. |
HOW By creating the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT) Program, we have trained members of the healthcare and yoga communities in the healing modalities of yoga therapy, Reiki, essential oiltherapy, nutrition and contemplative care. This curriculum is uniquely designed to treat the classic symptoms of illness: PANIC™ (pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia and constipation) and exhaustion. |
WHERE The objective of the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy program is to provide integrative therapists in hospitals, outpatient care centers, support groups, private practices, corporate environments, nursing and medical schools to transform healthcare to include eastern healing techniques with western medicine. |
HOW IT WORKS Each modality is introduced separately and then students are taught how to integrate the modalities to address those symptoms the patient or client is experiencing: PANIC™ (pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia and constipation) and exhaustion. |
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE Once integration has been instructed, students begin their practical experience during the clinical rotation requirement, working with patients, loved ones and caregivers. One hundred hours of such practice is required for certification. |

YOGA THERAPY
By combining gentle in-bed movements, repositioning of the patient (or caregiver) into a restorative position, breath awareness meditation, body scan, yoga therapy provides deep relaxation and restorative calmness allowing patients to release tension, ease breathing, promote sleep and encourage healing. |

REIKI
This healing energy can be done hands-on or hands-off. Reiki is similar to therapeutic touch. It is a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional bodies. Through the use of this technique, practitioners transfer healing energy through the palms. |

ESSENTIAL OIL THERAPY
The use of plant-based oils can be traced back to Biblical times. Used for its therapeutic properties, essential oils have been shown to assist in healing by inhalation, ingestion and topical use. Our therapists are trained to use highly diluted amounts of oils to provide therapeutic benefits based on the PANIC™ assessment model. |

NUTRITION
UZITs are trained in the fundamentals of good nutrition for self-care. Following this instruction, individual disease states and how nutrition affects each are examined to allow UZITs to approach nutrition as yet another tool for wellbeing. We do not train nutritionists or dieticians, instead we train our students in nutritional self-care. |

CONTEMPLATIVE CARE
UZITs are trained to sit with a patient, without judgment or agenda. We meet them at their physical and emotional level and never push to do more than a patient is able to do on a given day. |

| PENNY DOYLE Patient at BIMC “[The Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program] puts me in an emotional pliable state of mind where I can tune out a lot of this disease prone atmosphere because everything you look at here is clincal. But it takes you to another and different emotional and spiritual level. If you can get away from this… for just a few moments or an hour, that is a good thing.” SHANA KUHN-SIEGEL DR. MARTIN KARPEH |
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community Service is one of several unique requirements that the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program students must fulfill to complete training. These fifteen hours have proven to be emotionally, physically and spiritually impactful for therapist and patient alike as the work of the UZIT Program is shared with the community at large. From volunteering at events across the nation, such as VDay to the Winter 2009 Special Olympics, Fashion’s Night Out, and the Yoga Journal Conferences, our UZIT students continue to demonstrate the wide scope of applications from hospitals to patient advocacy and crisis situations as well as the athletic arena.

Financial support is critical to any philanthropic effort. Urban Zen’s future depends in part on contributions made by our community. Any monetary contribution will assist in the continued programming and events that gather us together to learn, become inspired and create change.
By making a donation to the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program, your contribution can be used to assist funding for:
* Continued research on the impact of integrative therapy for patients
* Creating paid integrative therapist positions at clinical sites
* Tuition scholarships to train future integrative therapists* Purchasing equipment and tools for training
Contributions are not limited to monetary donations. Urban Zen is a community for collaboration. If you have services or products that you believe will assist Urban Zen in raising awareness of our initiatives and inspiring change, please contact Gabrielle Frackman gfrackman@urbanzen.org
